International Adoption: A Prayer for Ukraine

Ukraine has over 100,000 orphans- 100,000 innocent lives, many of whom will never know the love of a parent. What's worse, 80,000 of these orphans have special needs and in many cases this was the reason for not being brought up in their birth family. People assume that orphans around the world are as well taken care of as many are in North America. Children with special needs in Eastern Europe commonly do not leave the hospital with their birth parents largely due to the misguided cultural belief that they would be incapable of raising this child, and that the state would be better equipped. However, the funds are just not there to provide these children with adequate care in the orphanage, so in many cases their needs are not met. At the young age of 4 many of these children will be put in adult mental institutions ranging from group home scenarios to being confined to a crib 24 hours a day. 50-80% of these children will die within the first year.

This documentary ignited mine and Adam's calling to adopt a child from Ukraine:

If you managed to get through the whole documentary (which I really hope you took the time to do) you would know that these children need all of our help- because God has called us to take care of orphans and we know it is the right thing to do. Because our heart aches for these children, we need to do anything that we can to help them. If not adopt them (several of the children you saw in the documentary are still available to adopt), join forces with the organizations who clothe them, feed them, help give their life meaning and hope. Maya's Hope is one organization that does just that, as well as many others. Another way to help is to donate to a family who is seeking adoption of a child who needs a home. My husband and I are currently pursuing the adoption of a child with special needs from Ukraine, and you can support us here. Alternatively, your can browse the Reece's Rainbow website and support the families who are pursuing the adoption of an orphan.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
